Psychotherapist, Counsellor. Gestalt Psychotherapy & Gestalt Psychotherapeutic Counselling for adults.
A few words about myself
My name is Nikki Macpherson and I am an experienced psychotherapist and counsellor, committed to providing counselling and psychotherapy in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment. Thank you for viewing my profile.
Does life feel like its getting on top of you?
Could you benefit from a place to take some time-out?
A space to explore your thoughts and feelings and to get back on a front foot again?
Psychotherapy and Counselling both provide the time and space for you to share and explore whatever you wish in confidence.
You may be feeling low, stressed or anxious and want to understand more about what is going on. You may have experienced a bereavement in your life and are finding life hard to manage. Alternatively, you may have a specific concern that is troubling you - a relationship difficulty, problems at work or an eating disorder. I will pay attention to the things that work for you as much as to the things that trouble you. Taking the opportunity to talk to someone outside your situation may enable you to see things more clearly and to support you to find ways to make new choices.
Generally I see Counselling as a shorter term process working with a specific focus. Psychotherapy works at greater depth enabling you to explore, for example, the underlying patterns of relating that you have developed and how these occur in your current life. You may wish to find deeper meaning in how you exist in the world. This awareness I see as key in making long term changes in the way you live your life in the world.
I hold a Masters in Gestalt Psychotherapy and a diploma in Gestalt Psychotherapeutic Counselling. Gestalt Psychotherapy is a form of talking therapy and is a fully holistic approach taking account of the whole person. Past situations are understood through the way they influence our present feelings and relationships. Past traumatic memories may need to be worked through, but this is always done at your own pace and when you feel safe enough to use your own resources and the support provided by therapy. Establishing a sense of safety in therapy is always the first priority.
Central to our work is building a relationship, so it is important that you choose to work with someone you feel comfortable with. Therapy may not be easy, but I will support you to explore what is troubling you at your pace. For this reason I would meet with you for an initial session giving you the chance to meet me and to see if you think what I have to offer is right for you.
I am experienced in helping clients who have experienced difficulties with :
- Relationship difficulties
- Personality disorders
- Work related difficulties
- Miscarriage and infertility
- Identity issues
- Dissatisfaction in life
- Lack of confidence
Initially I trained as a Medical Speech and Language Therapist working for many years with adults in various NHS settings. My focus has been on helping clients adjust to the impact of illness on their way of being; mental health conditions and in facing life-limiting conditions.
I have always been interested in therapy and curious as to how it works. This led me to complete my training as a Gestalt Psychotherapist at the Metanoia Institute (a leading centre for psychotherapy training in the UK) which involved looking in depth at understanding the human condition from various view points and in deepening and broadening my ways of working with people. I have a passion for helping people understand themselves and in navigating life's journey creatively.
I have practised for several years at a private counselling agency before commencing my own private practice. I have also volunteered at Community Housing and Therapy which is a therapeutic community supporting people who live with severe and enduring mental health conditions including personality disorders, mood disorders and psychosis. I also continue to support the training faculty at Metanoia working with students.
I am a registered psychotherapist with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP); and am also a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP).
I call this the assessment session as it is the chance for you to assess if I am the right person for you. It also gives me the opportunity to understand what you are looking for and to see if I feel what I can offer will suit you. We may then make an agreement to work together for a length of time according to your needs. This agreement may be for a set number of sessions - perhaps six or twelve - or be left open. We undertake regular reviews of our work together to ensure you are getting what you need from our therapy sessions.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have including enquiries about fees. If you would like to arrange a first appointment please send me a message by e-mail or phone. I will usually get back to you by the next working day.
