A few words about myself
Maria J. Romero - Psychotherapist, Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor
BA(Hons) Psych, MSc Gestalt Psychotherapy, Diploma in Supervision, Certificate in couples Therapy. BACP Accred/UKCP Reg
I am an experienced accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist working in English and Spanish. As well as having a private practice, I have been working with individuals and couples for the last 20 years in different settings (NHS, University and voluntary sector).
I see Therapy as a practice that will give you the opportunity to talk and explore what you are struggling with in a safe, supportive and confidential way, which can be extremely helpful in itself and often marks the beginning of a process of discovery and change. I feel very privileged to take part in the process of assisting people to notice and listen to themselves so that they can identify and explore the difficulties they may be experiencing in their lives. By doing this, it is possible to look at ways of doing things differently in order to live in a more fulfilling and satisfying way.
Working with people from different cultures has always been an interest; and currently, a third of my work is with Spanish speaking individuals and couples. Some of the issues they present are to do with having left their own country and experiencing difficulties with the transition and living abroad, identity, communication and relationship difficulties.
Frequent Issues I work with:
- Common life problems that arise as a result of life events such as work difficulties or life transitions (separation, loss, birth, major changes).
- Lack of confidence, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety and panic attacks, sexuality and relationship difficulties.
- Depression and other mental health illnesses.
- Difficulties with transitions and living in a different culture, identity, communication and relationships difficulties.
- Couples relationship difficulties: communication problems, conflict, infidelity, etc.
- Issues around difficulties conceiving, IVF, and pregnancy loss.
I understand that Counselling and Therapy can sometimes be a scary or daunting process to go into. To make this easier, I offer people the possibility of a 15-20 minutes telephone consultation free of charge, where we can discuss your reasons for wanting some Counselling, and where you can ask me any questions about my experience and how I work.
If after our initial conversation, we both feel we want to proceed, we can then arrange a face to face meeting. This meeting would last 50 minutes, and will give us the possibility to explore further what brings you to therapy.
